Striving for intercultural excellence

It was two years ago that Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) went regional with their decade-old Talent Management program. Family-owned, Munich-based and operating in 32 countries worldwide, G&D’s organizational vision states an ambitious commitment to „act with intercultural excellence.“ According to Simone Könen of Corporate Human Resources Development, those who nominate candidates for G&D’s Talent program understand „a certain set of characteristics that are important for people to have to drive the organization.“ G&D’s ongoing leadership training series with intercultures is at least one significant indication of this banknote and securities firm’s willingness to put their money where their mouth is.

Approaching Talent

Assuming that all trade secrets of G&D’s Talent Management strategy were not revealed in their recent interview for this article, the strategies below (shared in no particular order) can be said to represent a partial checklist of the company’s approach towards Talent:

  • Make „Talent Management“ and „intercultural competence development“ one in the same;
  • Regionalize Talent Management programs for a culturally relevant approach;
  • Engage in ongoing, qualitative exchange between Talent, leadership, technical professionals and others through debrief, knowledge sharing and discussion;
  • Create the expectation that Talent drives their own careers.

Creating value through Talent Management

In addition to the company’s training curricula for all employees and leaders, G&D offers regional Talent Management programs for nominated employees. Generally, the program includes modules on relevant leadership competencies; creativity and mindfulness; emotional intelligence; self-management; and relationship management. The program integrates action learning, case studies, discussion and individual and group reflection as well as a post-training fireside talk between participating Talent and local management. Overall, says Simone Könen, „Talent Management is something extremely positive. We want every participant to take away valuable learning.“ Click on the items above to learn about winning Talent Management strategies at G&D.
