In a coordinated investment project worth over EUR6 billion, ThyssenKruppSteel is building greenfield production sites in Sepitiba near Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and in Mount Vernon, Alabama, USA, which will begin catering to North American demands for high quality steel in 2009 and 2010, respectively. These new facilities will expand TKS‘ production capacity in the Americas, supplied at the moment locally by its Mexican operations in San Luis Potosí. The steel mill in Brazil will produce low-cost steel slabs for further processing in Mount Vernon, where approximately 2,700 employees will operate what will be the most advanced combined plant of its kind for flat carbon steel and stainless steel processing.
