Our understanding of intercultural coaching

From our point of view, intercultural coaching is the most specific, sustainable and economical intervention for the release of potential in executives involved in international processes.

Coaching is an “interactive, person-oriented consulting and steering process that primarily addresses professional concerns” (Rauen, 2004). Additional central features include spontaneity, transparency with regard to the processes, a set time frame, clear definition of objectives and their indicators as well as the promotion of self-reflection and the release of the client’s potential.

These definitions elucidate the goal orientation of the coaching process, which directly impacts on competence and leads to better integration in work processes. Learning can take place “on the job”, so to speak.

Our intercultural coaching expands on these standard elements by assisting the client to find suitable solutions to existing problems, employing knowledge of cultural systems and culture-specific behavior. Where leadership issues are involved, knowledge of diverse attitudes to authority and participation in India, Brazil or the US is a deciding factor.

Balancing support and autonomy

It is always important to take the interplay between the individual, the organization and the dominant culture into consideration. The coaching process enables the client to clearly define these categories. As much more input is often required in such cases than in those that take place in a mono-cultural context, maintaining the balance between support and autonomy is crucial.

Demands on an intercultural coach

Maintaining the balance between support and self-sufficiency places considerable demands on an intercultural coach. Not only must he or she possess the requisite coaching skills, but also a profound knowledge of both culture-specific and non-specific matters. Ideally, the coach would be a native of the culture in question, or will have lived and worked there for an extended period of time. These qualifications severely limit the number of intercultural coaches available in Germany. At present, intercultures has more than a dozen intercultural coaches in its expert pool. Our trainers and consultants are not automatically also coaches, even though they often employ elements of coaching in their training sessions. The term “coach” is rather fashionable at the moment.

Coaching Options

In situations where complex intercultural challenges are an issue, we recommend that our clients use a combination of training and coaching to develop potential.

We offer
  • Individual coaching
  • Group coaching (only in combination with training)
  • Team coaching
  • Tele-coaching (only in combination with other forms of coaching)

We are driven by the wise rule: it is the client who seeks out the coach, and not the other way around. We look forward to your enquiries!

Our understanding of intercultural consulting

Our consultancy differs from standard forms in that we only offer it as a complete concept which also includes proposals for training and coaching.

Experience shows that in the majority of intercultural effectiveness issues, providing solution strategies alone is not sufficient. More often than not, it is the expansion of potential through training and coaching that leads to sustainable results.

Examples of processes that we have seen through to fruition include support during team-building in India and Germany, the launching of a pharmaceutical product in the Islamic world, and integrating community support programs during the construction of a telecommunications company’s production site in Brazil.

Combining consulting, training and facilitation

While consulting, our experts employ the most expedient method(s) for any particular situation, which may include training, coaching and/or facilitation.

An expert must, nevertheless, preserve a clear separation between the different methodologies and know their limitations.

We would rather decline an assignment than lead you astray. But we will gladly lead you in the right direction!
